Genre & Audience Fit
Chattanooga’s Premiere Alt-Rock, Post-Punk College Radio Experience
The Retrophonics is a Chattanooga-based alt-rock, post-punk band celebrating the golden era of 80s and 80s college radio. We deliver high-energy, guitar-first performances of artists such as R.E.M., Elvis Costello, The Church, Echo & the Bunnymen, Roxy Music, and The Alarm, and others in this vein/genre.
We are seasoned musicians who recreate the sound and spirit of late 70s and 80s alternative music that brings more guitar (less synth/keys).
Our approach from day 1 was to create a music collective based on our authentic experiences from the genre, preserving the sound of 80s College Radio for the next generation of musicians and music lovers. Our 3 lead singers who also harmonize add to the completeness of the guitar-oriented retro collective.

The Retrophonics Band Members
Tony Perri - Guitars, Vocals
Tony was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama, a place of diverse cultures with a wide range of music influences. Tony started playing guitar in the 1970s. “My mother used to tell me stories of long ago (the 1930s), when her family would all sit on their porch after dinner and play Spanish guitar. There was a lot more porch guitar playing than radio playing.”
Tony’s music influences are a cornucopia of sounds from a multitude of genres, generally inspired by the decades of the 1960s, 70s and 80s — 60s psychedelia pop rock, 70s & 80s new wave, blues, folk, punk, Motown, and indie. If it has good movement, a nice chord progression and flowing melody, Tony’s a fan.
Mathew Mayer - Guitars, Vocals
Matthew Mayer, guitars, vocals. Matt is a seasoned guitarist with 43 years of experience, starting his musical journey at age 12. His melodic style is defined by a deep appreciation for the jangle-pop masters, drawing primary influence from the chiming, texture-rich sounds of George Harrison, Peter Buck, Johnny Marr, Marty Willson-Piper, and Peter Koppes. Now 55, Matthew continues to channel these iconic guitar architects into thoughtful, expressive parts.
Gio Ciotti - Guitars, Vocals
Hailing from Erie, Pennsylvania, G has played in rock and experimental projects in Denver, Los Angeles, United Kingdom, and most recently – Chattanooga.
At the age of 12, he received a Psychedelic Furs cassette as a gift from a customer on his newspaper route. Between that and MTV’s 120 minutes – his love for The Retrophonics’ genre is quite strong.
“Music might be the most profoundly beautiful thing we can do as humans.”
Jim Kocieniewski - Drums, Percussion
Jim Kocieniewski was born in Buffalo NY and has been drumming for 45 years. Originally a heavy metal drummer in the 80’s. Jim has since been in several bands, Rotary Dial, Take Cover, Legacy and Good Medicine, playing music from the 1960’s to the present day. Drummer influences include John Bonham, Ringo Starr, Steve Ferrone and Taylor Hawkins. Jim enjoys dark chocolate and dark beer. Go Bills!!
